Job Title:  Westside Community Schools Skilled Support Specialist/Behaviors - District Wide - Full time 10 month

 

Department: Special Services

 

Direct Accountability:  Director of Special Services and Building Principal

 

Job Summary:

The Skilled Support Specialist will provide:

• On-site and consultative support to staff, students and families in efforts to facilitate positive behavioral change in students identified as exhibiting behavioral difficulties that impede their social development and academic success. 
• Supportive interventions to families and/or students; complying with Federal, State, and District policies, regulations and/or procedures. 
• Assist in the development and implementation of an effective behavioral program for students within all learning environments. 
• Responsible for collaborating with staff for the purpose of monitoring, redirecting and modifying student behavioral programming, administering intensive behavior intervention programs for identified students, communicating with parents and administrators about behaviors and student discipline, and other responsibilities directly associated with the program management and facilitation.  

Education Level and Certification:

Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma or GED required.

 

Experience:

Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the possession of a Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in psychology, social work, counseling, or special education will be considered; previous experience in special education and working with at-risk students or students who are demonstrative of disruptive behavior required. Training in Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is highly desirable. 

 

Special Qualifications:

Knowledge of appropriate behavioral intervention strategies; laws, rules and regulations of acceptable behavioral intervention, including de-escalation and personal safety techniques; interpersonal skills needed to manage crisis situations; resiliency, unquestioned integrity, and a commitment to the mission and values of the Westside Community School District.

 

Required Skill and Ability:

• Assess and objectively analyze behavioral crisis-situations, make proper judgment decisions, respond and communicate quickly and effectively
• Maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports; communicate effectively in both oral and written forms with students and adults
• Be trained and updated in safety, security, physical restraints, and behavior management procedures
• Develop rapport, professional relationships and ongoing communication with students, teachers, families, and other staff for the purpose of providing/implementing individual strategies and group interventions that are in line with student goals
• Work effectively, cooperatively, confidentially, and respectfully with staff, parents and community members regardless of race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnic/national origin, religion, marital status, age, socio-economic status or disability
• Develop and implement safe and effective behavioral management techniques consistent with IEP behavior goals and behavior intervention plans to reduce the number of disruptive behaviors in the classroom, home, and the community
• Physically manage acting-out behavior of children utilizing authorized intervention protocols

• Recognize and follow board of education policy when disruptive, abusive, or dangerous behavior occurs; serve as a mandatory child abuse/neglect reporter

• Perform all other duties as delegated by the immediate supervisor

Performance Requirements:

• Work as a team member with administration, teachers, counselors, social workers, and other personnel to develop appropriate and positive behavior modifications enabling students to succeed across a variety of district settings
• Work independently under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods
• Assist instructional personnel by participating as a team member in the development and monitoring of comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals, and plans, including a Functional Behavioral Assessment, Behavior Support Plan (BSP) and/or a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
• Support individualized student programs for students needing assistance outside the classroom setting
• Work one-on-one with students to affect behavior changes; evaluate student’s needs and provide interventions to redirect behavior
• Participate actively in all team meetings, staff meetings, individual and group supervision meetings and school meetings (IEP, SAT, MDT, etc.) as requested
• Comply with district standards, Board policies, FERPA, and all federal and state confidentiality laws
• Maintain all appropriate records including incident reports, behavioral tracking forms, lesson plans consistent with IEP goals and objectives, attendance records, and other records as required
